1. Get ready for the California Urban Wood Conference! May 19-21, San Francisco
Golden Gate Club, Presidio of San Francisco

This conference features a fantastic collection of speakers from across the nation who represents some of the top leaders in urban wood utilization. Learn from their extensive experience some lessens to bring about the change you would like your community to make.

A special thank you to Cal Fire for their financial support as they have known for years the importance of this industry becoming successful to both divert green waste and to produce amazing wood products to educate our cities of the extreme value of our trees beyond the production of bio-fuels and mulch. Since much of the talk is to carbon sequestration in urban forestry these days, what better way to store carbon than a beautiful finished slab conference table!

And another thanks to the local and, not so local, artisans who will transport their incredible urban wood products to share with us on the third day. These incredible pieces represent examples of end uses that we all want to see more of in the coming years.

Looking at the entire package of our urban forest from cradle to grave and ALL the benefits we get from our city’s trees, we must not continue the absolute waste of this asset to mulch and bio-fuels whenever possible. Our cities are all beginning to be forward thinking and we all will be embracing this urban milling at some point in the near future.

Please take a look at the conference website and look closely at the speakers.

3. Wanted: 6 great cities to host 6 great Municipal Forestry Interns

This is an attempt to locate 6 (six) of the absolute BEST cities to host 6 (six) of the BEST interns this upcoming summer.

Society of Municipal Aborists is sponsoring the Municipal Forestry Internship Program (MFI-P), which is a cutting edge internship opportunity that is unlike any other.  It is developed around a curriculum and promotes the establishment of a mentoring relationship between the city forester and the intern.

It is our hope that you will look at the curriculum and the contract (links below) and after reviewing them both you would submit your name and city as an interested Host.

Once we select the six (6) cities we need, we will send each of the city foresters the application, essay, and pertinent information about each approved student.  At that time, interviews will be scheduled and in one week (following the interviews) we will assign you a student.  Once we have matched students with Host City we will begin the process of scheduling the start date and locating affordable housing (your help appreciated).

Each city who is selected will receive:
- the opportunity to be a part of an elite group of mentors;
- a summer intern who was selected in a nationwide search;
- a scholarship (registration only) to the 2011 Annual SMA Conference;
- and much, much more.

Please find the Host City Interest Form here:
http://sma.memberclicks.net/assets/documents/mfi-p-host-city-flier.pdf

and the mandatory Intern Agreement contract between your City and SMA here:
http://sma.memberclicks.net/assets/documents/sma-intern-agreement.doc

We ask that BEFORE you enter your City as an interested Host, you review the above forms with the "powers that be" in your city.

5. The Recession's Gift - A New Opportunity for Boards to Excel – May 3 webinar

Join Jeanne Bell for a webinar on May 3, 2011 at noon to talk about nonprofit boards, the recession, and going beyond financial oversight.

Is there a new "best practice for boards" that has emerged out of the recession? Jeanne Bell, CEO of CompassPoint Nonprofit Services and an expert in nonprofit management and finance, has observed that some boards have been forced to take a deeper look at the combination of their financial and organizational design as a result of changing revenue streams.

The new practice will serve nonprofits far better than simple financial oversight... if boards can retain the practice even as the recovery occurs.  You will be given the opportunity to submit questions ahead of time as well as during the Trendcast.

Join the lively discussion and spread the word--invite your board members and colleagues to this free, interactive Nonprofit Trendcast.
